Dr. Samuel Akonga, a member of the Upper East Regional Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and an academic, has called for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to be brought back to Ghana to account for his stewardship of the country’s finances.
Speaking during a political discussion on BlueWaves Radio, Dr. Akonga argued that some decisions taken by the former Finance Minister had far-reaching consequences for both the governing New Patriotic Party and the Ghanaian economy, and therefore warranted legal scrutiny.
According to him, accountability remains a core principle of democratic governance, and individuals who have held high public office must be prepared to answer questions regarding their actions while in office.
Dr. Akonga further expressed concern that although Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia served as Vice President during that period, he was allegedly constrained from playing a more decisive role in key economic decisions that affected the country and the party’s fortunes.
He noted that these developments have contributed to public dissatisfaction and internal party challenges, stressing the need for lessons to be drawn as the NPP repositions itself for the future.
Touching on internal party matters, Dr. Akonga urged the leadership of the NPP to shift focus away from early debates over a potential running mate for Dr. Bawumia. Instead, he called for deliberate efforts to strengthen the party’s grassroots base, particularly by empowering the youth.
He appealed to party leadership to actively encourage young people to take up executive and leadership roles within the party, describing youth participation as critical to rebuilding confidence, innovation, and long-term growth of the NPP.
Dr. Akonga emphasized that a united party driven by youthful energy and accountability would be better positioned to regain public trust and compete effectively in future elections.
