Climate Advocate Calls for Bicycle Lanes to Help Fight Climate Change

A young climate change advocate, Mr. James Kumbeni, has called on government to expand Ghana’s road infrastructure to include dedicated bicycle lanes as part of efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable transportation.

Speaking on the BlueWaves Breakfast Show, Mr. Kumbeni stressed that cycling is not only a healthy lifestyle choice but also an environmentally friendly mode of transport that can significantly reduce carbon emissions if properly supported.

According to him, Ghana’s current road infrastructure largely prioritizes motor vehicles, leaving little or no space for bicycle riders. He believes that creating designated bicycle lanes will encourage more people to adopt cycling as a means of transport, thereby reducing the country’s carbon footprint.

“If we are serious about fighting climate change, then we must begin to rethink how we design our roads. Bicycle riders also deserve safe space on our roads,” Mr. Kumbeni stated.

He further appealed to motorists to respect cyclists and recognize that the road is meant for all users, not only cars. He lamented what he described as the growing disregard some drivers show toward other road users.

“Some of the cars don’t respect other road users, and it is very bad,” he emphasized, calling for a change in attitude among motorists to ensure safer roads for everyone.

Beyond infrastructure and road safety, Mr. Kumbeni also urged key stakeholders within the educational sector to promote cycling among the younger generation. He believes schools can play a critical role in shaping attitudes toward environmentally responsible practices, including the use of bicycles as a sustainable transport option.

As a passionate climate change advocate, Mr. Kumbeni expressed deep concern about recent climate patterns and the increasing effects of environmental degradation, including issues related to ozone layer depletion. He warned that without deliberate policies and behavioural change, the impact of climate change could worsen in the coming years.

He concluded by urging policymakers to integrate climate-conscious planning into national development strategies, noting that small but strategic steps—such as incorporating bicycle lanes into road projects—can make a significant difference in protecting the environment.
