Residents of Bolga East have embarked on a demonstration to express their frustration over the prolonged delay in the completion of the Zuarungu stretch of the Bolgatanga–Bawku road. The protest, which drew a significant number of community members, highlights growing concerns over the poor state of the road and its impact on livelihoods, transportation, and economic activities in the area.
According to the demonstrators, the uncompleted section of the road has become a major challenge, especially during the rainy season when it becomes nearly impassable. They are therefore calling on government to, as a matter of urgency, mobilize resources and contractors back to site to ensure the completion of the project.
Residents argue that despite previous assurances and partial work done on the road, progress has stalled, leaving commuters, traders, and motorists to bear the brunt of dust, erosion, and frequent vehicle breakdowns. Some protesters also indicated that the situation is affecting access to healthcare, education, and markets, thereby slowing down development in the enclave.
Meanwhile, in a separate but significant development, Cabinet has urged the Ministers of Energy and Finance to consider the removal of certain taxes on petroleum products in the next pricing window. This directive is seen as part of efforts to ease the burden of rising fuel prices on Ghanaians.
Fuel prices in recent times have seen upward adjustments, triggering concerns among transport operators and the general public. Analysts believe that reducing taxes on petroleum products could provide some relief and potentially stabilize transport fares and the cost of goods and services.
If implemented, the move is expected to bring some level of economic relief to citizens who are already grappling with the high cost of living. However, experts also caution that any tax removal must be carefully balanced against government revenue needs.
As residents in Bolga East continue to demand action on critical infrastructure, the potential fuel tax relief offers a parallel narrative of government’s efforts to address economic pressures nationwide.
