GETFund Intervention Brings Relief to Bolga-Sherigu Community Day SHS After Years of Infrastructure Deficit

Bolgatanga, Upper East Region — The long-standing infrastructure challenges confronting Bolga-Sherigu Community Day Senior High School in the Bolgatanga Municipality are set to be addressed, following the commencement of eleven major development projects at the school’s new site.
The intervention comes after years of neglect since the school was absorbed into the public system in 2015, with little to no significant infrastructure development undertaken at its current location.
Concerns about the school’s conditions intensified in July 2025, when it was reported that eleven female students had become pregnant. School authorities and community leaders partly attributed the situation to inadequate infrastructure and poor learning conditions.
The situation highlighted the pressing challenges facing the school, including dilapidated classroom blocks, the absence of a dining hall and kitchen, lack of staff accommodation, poor sanitation facilities, and the unavailability of essential structures such as an administrative block, library, and science laboratories.
It also brought attention to efforts by the Sherigu community, which donated a vast parcel of land at Basengo to facilitate the relocation of the school. However, development at the new site had stalled, with only two incomplete three-unit classroom blocks in place.
Hope, however, is now on the horizon for students, staff, and residents of Bolga-Sherigu. On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugre Donatus Atanga, performed a sod-cutting ceremony to signal the commencement of eleven GETFund-funded projects at the new site.
The projects include a three-storey, 18-unit classroom block, separate boys’ and girls’ dormitories with courtyards, a two-storey administration and library complex, and a 12-seater toilet facility.
Addressing stakeholders at the ceremony, the Regional Minister called on traditional authorities to ensure proper documentation of school lands to protect educational investments and prevent future disputes.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Bolgatanga, Roland Ayoo, emphasized that the initiative reflects the commitment of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to equitable development. He noted that while in opposition, the party pledged to prioritize underserved communities such as Bolga-Sherigu, and the ongoing projects demonstrate efforts to fulfill that promise.
Headmistress of the school, Madam Janne Edna Karaah, expressed profound appreciation to the government for the intervention. She underscored the difficulties the school has faced operating from temporary structures, noting that the situation has significantly hindered effective teaching and learning.
Madam Karaah further appealed for the completion of an additional three-unit classroom block initiated by the Municipal Assembly, stressing that its completion would further enhance the school’s learning environment.
The commencement of these projects marks a significant step toward improving educational infrastructure in Bolga-Sherigu and restoring confidence among students, parents, and the wider community.
