Bolgatanga, Ghana — The Bolgatanga District Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Solomon Gbenga, has strongly condemned the prolonged delay in the payment of teachers’ salaries, describing the situation as “unacceptable.”
Speaking on the BlueWaves Breakfast Show on BlueWaves Radio 93.7FM, Mr. Gbenga expressed deep concern over reports that some teachers have gone without salaries for as long as 17 months. He warned that such delays not only undermine the welfare of teachers but also threaten the quality of education in the country.
According to him, teachers play a critical role in national development and must be treated with fairness and dignity. “Teachers being unpaid for up to 17 months is unacceptable,” he stressed, calling on the relevant authorities to act swiftly to resolve the issue.
Mr. Gbenga noted that the persistent salary delays are taking a heavy toll on affected teachers, many of whom are struggling to meet basic needs and professional responsibilities. He added that the situation risks demoralizing educators, potentially affecting teaching and learning outcomes in schools.
The GNAT chairman further urged the government and stakeholders in the education sector to prioritize the timely payment of salaries to avoid disruptions in the academic calendar. He emphasized that failure to address the issue could lead to industrial action, which would further impact students across the country.
His comments add to growing concerns within the education sector over teacher welfare, as calls intensify for urgent intervention to address the salary backlog and restore confidence among educators.
