The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in the Bolgatanga Municipality has launched a public appeal to residents to take advantage of a limited-time opportunity to renew their membership cards free of charge.
The exercise, which runs from April 15 to May 31, 2026, forms part of a broader initiative aimed at expanding access to healthcare services across the Upper East Region.
Speaking on the BlueWaves Breakfast Show, the Municipal Manager of NHIS in Bolgatanga, Mr. Roland Ayeni, encouraged all residents—particularly those whose memberships have expired—to seize the opportunity and renew their cards without any cost.
According to him, the initiative is not limited to Bolgatanga Municipality alone but extends to all 15 districts in the Upper East Region. He explained that the intervention is a strategic component of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare policy, designed to reduce financial barriers and ensure equitable access to essential health services.
Mr. Ayine emphasized that maintaining an active NHIS membership is critical for individuals and families to benefit from a wide range of healthcare services, including outpatient and inpatient care, maternal services, and emergency treatments.
He further noted that the free renewal exercise is expected to significantly increase active membership and improve healthcare coverage in the region, especially among vulnerable populations.
Residents have therefore been advised to visit designated NHIS registration centers within their communities before the May 31 deadline to update or renew their membership cards.
The NHIS continues to play a vital role in Ghana’s healthcare delivery system, providing financial protection and improving access to quality healthcare for millions of citizens.
