The Food and Drugs Authority has seized 140 boxes of alcoholic beverages mixed with stimulants in the Upper East Region as part of intensified efforts to protect public health and ensure consumer safety.
The confiscated products, identified as Bel Ice Vodka Energy Drink and Cody’s Vody Energy Mix, have been banned from sale and distribution in Ghana due to the health dangers associated with combining alcohol and stimulants.
Speaking on BlueWaves Radio on Monday morning, the Acting Upper East Regional Head of the FDA, Mr. Abel Ndego, urged members of the public to exercise caution when purchasing beverages from shops and drinking spots. He warned consumers to remain vigilant and report suspicious products to the appropriate authorities.

According to Mr. Ndego, the seized drinks were confiscated because the stimulant content in such beverages can conceal the effects of alcohol intoxication, encouraging excessive consumption and exposing users to serious health complications.
He explained that mixing alcohol with stimulants poses significant risks, as consumers may underestimate their level of intoxication, potentially leading to dangerous behaviours, alcohol poisoning, cardiovascular complications and other health-related emergencies.
“The FDA is working for your safety. These drinks are banned in Ghana because they mask intoxication, leading to overconsumption and health risks. The FDA warns consumers to avoid these products and prioritizes public health safety,” the Authority stated.
The FDA reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health through continuous market surveillance, monitoring and enforcement operations across the country.
The Authority further cautioned traders, wholesalers and distributors to strictly comply with regulations governing the sale and distribution of alcoholic beverages in Ghana, warning that persons found dealing in banned or unapproved products risk sanctions under the law.
Residents have also been encouraged to verify products before purchase and promptly report any suspected unregistered or banned drinks circulating on the market.
The latest seizure forms part of ongoing nationwide measures by the FDA to clamp down on unsafe products and protect consumers from harmful substances.
