Ayariga Backs Call for New Parliamentary Constituency in Kassena-Nankana West

The Majority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Bawku, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has thrown his weight behind renewed calls for the creation of an additional parliamentary constituency in the Kassena-Nankana West District, describing the demand as legitimate and long overdue.

Hon. Ayariga made these remarks at the maiden Azuko Festival, organized as part of activities marking the 10th anniversary of the enskinment of Naba Atogumdeya Roland Akwara III, chief of Sirigu. The colourful cultural event brought together traditional leaders, political figures, and residents, and also provided a platform for deliberations on key development challenges confronting the area.

Addressing the gathering, the Majority Leader acknowledged persistent appeals by the Member of Parliament for Chiana-Paga, Hon. Nikyema Billa Alamzy, for the district to be split into two constituencies to enhance governance, accessibility, and effective representation.

“My brother, the Honourable Member of Parliament, has reiterated what has been a long-standing appeal — the need to divide this constituency into two. This is something I have known for the past 12 years,” Hon. Ayariga stated.

He noted that the promise of creating a new constituency in Kassena-Nankana West has featured prominently in several election cycles, but remains unfulfilled due to political and administrative challenges, often requiring difficult compromises.

“Unfortunately, term after term, we have not been able to live up to a promise that has been made so many times,” he admitted, expressing concern over the delay.

Although he stopped short of making a firm commitment on timelines, Hon. Ayariga assured the people of his solidarity and support for the cause.

“Standing here, I cannot make a definite promise, but I want to assure you that I sympathize with you, I agree with you, I support you, and I will join you to fight for that cause,” he emphasized, drawing applause from the audience.

Residents of Kassena-Nankana West have long argued that the vast size of the constituency places enormous strain on administrative structures, hampers effective service delivery, and limits meaningful engagement between elected representatives and constituents.

Beyond its cultural significance, the Azuko Festival—celebrated in honour of the founder of the Sirigu community—once again highlighted the intersection between tradition and development, underscoring the role of cultural platforms in amplifying grassroots development concerns.

The renewed support from the Majority Leader is expected to add momentum to ongoing advocacy efforts for the creation of a new constituency, a move many believe would deepen democratic representation and accelerate development in the district.
