An aspirant for the Upper East Regional Women’s Organiser position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Madam Evelyn Abingde, has declared former Vice President Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia as the most suitable candidate to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.
Madam Abingde, who currently serves as the Bolgatanga East Constituency Women’s Organiser, made the remarks during an interview on the BlueWaves Breakfast Show as the NPP edges closer to selecting its next presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 polls.
According to her, the NPP’s internal political tradition supports continuity in leadership, noting that the party has historically maintained its presidential candidates until they secure electoral victory. She argued that, consistent with this tradition, Dr. Bawumia deserves another opportunity to lead the party after his first attempt.
“Looking at the history of the New Patriotic Party, we do not easily abandon our candidates. We repeat candidates until they win, and Dr. Bawumia should be allowed to go through the same process,” she stated.
Madam Abingde further highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s experience and leadership credentials, pointing to his eight-year tenure as Vice President as a major strength. She said his exposure at the highest level of governance, coupled with his role in key policy initiatives and economic management, makes him well-prepared to steer the party into the future.
She described Dr. Bawumia as an outstanding leader whose vision and competence place him ahead of the pack in the ongoing presidential contest within the party.
Beyond the presidential race, Madam Abingde also underscored the enduring strength of the NPP, describing it as one of the most attractive political parties in Ghana, particularly among the youth. She noted that despite recent electoral setbacks, the party continues to command strong grassroots support and remains capable of returning to power.
“The NPP remains one of the best political parties in Ghana. It is a party that young people are proud to join, and with the right leadership, we can reorganise, rebuild, and win power again,” she added.
Madam Abingde used the opportunity to appeal to supporters of all aspirants within the Upper East Region to avoid personal attacks and divisive politics as the party prepares for its internal processes. She stressed the importance of unity and mutual respect, especially after the party’s internal timelines are concluded.
She emphasized that once the internal contest ends on January 31, 2026, the party must rally behind its chosen candidate to ensure victory in the 2028 general elections.
“After January 31, 2026, Dr. Bawumia will need the support of everyone in the party. Unity is key if we want to return to power,” she urged.
The comments come at a time when the NPP is intensifying internal engagements aimed at rebuilding and consolidating the party ahead of the next national elections.
