Bolga East Assembly Moves to Gazette Sanitation By-Laws – DCE Reveals

The Bolga East District Assembly in the Upper East Region has initiated processes to gazette by-laws aimed at strengthening sanitation enforcement across the district.

District Chief Executive, Hon. Jacob Abugri Aka-Eri, disclosed that the decision has become necessary due to persistent poor sanitation practices among some residents.

According to him, certain individuals deliberately litter the environment with the assumption that sanitation task forces or volunteers will clean up during the monthly clean-up exercises. He described this attitude as regrettable and counterproductive to efforts at maintaining a clean and healthy district.

“It is worrying that some residents intentionally litter their surroundings, believing that sanitation day volunteers will clear the waste for them,” he stated, stressing that such behavior undermines collective responsibility.

Hon. Aka-Eri further expressed concern over what he described as a growing misconception that it is solely the Assembly’s duty to clean household frontages. He clarified that property owners and occupants have a civic obligation to keep their immediate surroundings clean at all times.

The DCE reiterated that the National Sanitation Day initiative is not merely about sweeping streets or picking up refuse. Rather, he explained, it also serves as a platform to educate and sensitize residents on proper waste collection, disposal, and environmental management practices.

He emphasized that once the by-laws are gazetted, offenders who flout sanitation regulations will face sanctions in accordance with the law.

The Assembly, he assured, remains committed to promoting environmental cleanliness and public health, calling on residents to support the initiative by adopting responsible waste management habits.
