The Upper East Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, Chief Inspector Abdul Rahman Sumaila, has disclosed that the Bolgatanga Municipality currently records the highest number of motorbike snatching incidents in the region.
Speaking on the BlueWaves Breakfast Show, Chief Inspector Sumaila expressed concern over the rising trend of motorbike-related crimes, noting that motorbikes remain the most common means of transportation in the region and have consequently become prime targets for criminals.
According to him, police intelligence and crime data point to Bolgatanga Municipality as the hotspot for motorbike snatching, with most incidents occurring in residential areas, especially during late evening and early morning hours.
He explained that criminals often exploit poor lighting, weak neighbourhood surveillance, and the absence of prompt reporting to carry out their operations with ease.
Chief Inspector Sumaila used the platform to call on landlords and landladies across the municipality and the wider region to support police efforts by prominently displaying police emergency contact numbers in their houses and compounds.
“Many tenants and residents do not know who to call in times of emergency. If police contact numbers are posted in homes, it will help ensure rapid response and timely intervention,” he stressed.
He further urged residents to be security-conscious, advising motorbike owners to avoid parking in dark or isolated areas, invest in strong locks, and promptly report any suspicious movements within their neighbourhoods.
The Regional Police PRO also appealed to community leaders, youth groups, and residents to collaborate closely with the police by sharing credible information that could lead to the arrest of suspects involved in motorbike theft and other criminal activities.
Chief Inspector Sumaila assured the public that the Regional Police Command has intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations, particularly as the Christmas festivities approach, to curb crime and ensure the safety of lives and property.
He reiterated the Police Service’s commitment to protecting residents of the Upper East Region and warned that criminals will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“The police are ready and prepared. With the support of the public, we will make the region uncomfortable for criminals,” he concluded.
The Ghana Police Service continues to encourage citizens to see security as a shared responsibility and to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace and order in the region.
