Bolgatanga Sets Sights on Regaining Title as Ghana’s Cleanest City

The Bolgatanga Municipality is rolling out a renewed and comprehensive sanitation strategy aimed at restoring the city’s former status as the cleanest city in Ghana, authorities have announced.

The Head of the Bolgatanga Sanitation Task Force and Assembly Member for Bolgatanga Soe Electoral Area, Mr. Lambert Akunzebe, disclosed this during interactions with the media on Saturday on the sidelines of activities marking the National Sanitation Day.

According to Mr. Akunzebe, the municipality has already begun implementing a multi-pronged approach focused on strict enforcement of sanitation by-laws, sustained public education, and increased community participation in cleanliness activities. He explained that the strategy places emphasis on regular clean-up exercises, proper waste segregation, and the elimination of open dumping within residential and commercial areas.

He noted that sanitation enforcement teams would be reactivated and strengthened to ensure that individuals and businesses that flout sanitation regulations are sanctioned in accordance with existing laws. “We are determined to enforce the by-laws without fear or favour. Cleanliness is a shared responsibility, and every resident must play their part,” he stated.

Mr. Akunzebe further highlighted plans to intensify public sensitisation campaigns, particularly at the community level, to encourage behavioural change towards waste management. He said traditional leaders, market associations, transport unions, and youth groups would be actively engaged to help sustain the gains of the sanitation drive.

Speaking on the National Sanitation Day exercise, he commended residents, institutions, and organisations that turned up in large numbers to participate, describing the response as a positive sign of growing public commitment to environmental cleanliness. He stressed that the goal is not to clean the city once a month, but to make cleanliness a daily culture.

He also appealed to residents to desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, open defecation, and littering of public spaces, warning that such practices undermine public health and development. According to him, a clean Bolgatanga would not only enhance the city’s image but also reduce the incidence of sanitation-related diseases.

Mr. Akunzebe reaffirmed the Sanitation Task Force’s commitment to working closely with the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the initiative.

The renewed sanitation drive, he said, forms part of broader efforts by the Municipal Assembly to promote environmental sustainability and improve the quality of life for residents, with the ultimate goal of positioning Bolgatanga once again as a model city for cleanliness in Ghana.
