Dr. Akonga calls on NPP to empower the youth to take up leadership role

Dr. Samuel Akonga, a member of the Upper East Regional Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and an academic, has called on the leadership of the party to deliberately create space for the youth to assume leadership and executive roles as part of efforts to rebuild and strengthen the party.

Speaking on BlueWaves Radio during a political discussion, Dr. Akonga stressed that the future of the NPP depends largely on how well it mobilises, empowers, and integrates young people into decision-making structures at all levels of the party.

According to him, excessive focus on early internal debates, including discussions around a potential running mate for Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, risks distracting the party from more pressing issues such as grassroots organisation and youth empowerment.

“The party must shift its attention to grooming and positioning the youth for leadership. They are the backbone of the party and must be given real responsibility, not just roles on paper,” he stated.

In the same discussion, Dr. Akonga also touched on matters of accountability in governance, calling for former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to be brought back to Ghana to answer questions regarding decisions taken during his tenure.

He argued that some of the former Finance Minister’s policy decisions had adverse effects on both the Ghanaian economy and the electoral fortunes of the NPP, making it necessary for him to face the full rigours of the law.

Dr. Akonga further expressed concern that although Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia served as Vice President at the time, he was not afforded the opportunity to play a more decisive role in key economic decisions that affected the country.

He noted that these developments have contributed to public dissatisfaction and internal challenges within the party, stressing the need for accountability, reflection, and renewal as the NPP prepares for the future.

Dr. Akonga concluded by reiterating that a rejuvenated party anchored on youth leadership, accountability, and unity would be better positioned to regain public trust and remain competitive in future elections.
