The Health Facilities Regulatory Agency (HeFRA) has taken decisive action, ordering the immediate closure of the Tamale Technical University Hospital due to grave safety violations and serious concerns regarding infection prevention protocols.
In an official statement released on Monday, November 10, HeFRA outlined that comprehensive intelligence reports, bolstered by compelling video footage and photographic evidence, uncovered alarming truths about the hospital’s operations. It was revealed that essential healthcare services were being administered in a setting characterized by unsafe and unsanitary conditions, raising significant health risks for patients and staff alike.
A subsequent inspection conducted by HeFRA’s Compliance and Enforcement Directorate on Monday, November 3, 2025, corroborated these dire findings. Inspectors discovered that the hospital had been functioning with an expired operating license, a clear contravention of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829), which mandates strict compliance with licensing regulations.
As a result of these violations, HeFRA has mandated that the Tamale Technical University Hospital remain closed from Friday, November 7, 2025, until all identified safety lapses and infection control deficiencies have been thoroughly addressed and rectified. The facility is also facing a substantial fine of GHS35,000 and has been directed to regularize its licensing status before it can consider resuming its operations. This action underscores HeFRA’s commitment to ensuring that healthcare facilities adhere to the highest standards of safety and hygiene for the well-being of the public.
