
Hummul-Krusum Tahiru, Gender Desk Manager at A1 Radio in Bolgatanga, has been named Female Journalist of the Year at the 4th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Upper East Awards. This marks the second time Tahiru has received the prestigious recognition, solidifying her status as a leading voice in regional journalism. She also secured the award for Best Gender Reporter of the Year.
The 4th edition of the GJA Upper East Awards, which celebrated excellence in journalism across the Upper East Region, on October 10, 2025, held at BlueSky Hotel in Kumbosigo, Bolgatanga, and celebrating excellence in journalism across the Upper East Region culminated in Tahiru’s double victory in categories highlighting female achievement and gender-focused reporting. Her win in the Female Journalist of the Year category stands as the ultimate honour in the female division. The 4th GJA Upper East Regional Awards featured 13 main entries, with an additional category (Promising Journalist of the Year) presented by Bolgatanga Technical University, bringing the total to 14 award categories.
In an interview with journalists following the ceremony, Tahiru delivered a message of empowerment to her female colleagues. She encouraged women in the field to actively challenge themselves and pursue impactful stories, emphasizing their capability to perform at par with their male counterparts.
“Female journalists should challenge themselves and write stories. They are equally up to the task, just as the men do,” Tahiru stated.
Extending her call beyond current practitioners, Tahiru passionately urged women with a passion for journalism to join the profession without hesitation. She stressed that increasing female representation in media is crucial for amplifying women’s voices and effectively addressing challenges faced by women and girls.
“It takes a woman to understand the issues of women better than men,” Tahiru explained, highlighting the unique perspective female journalists bring to reporting on gender-sensitive topics. Her advocacy underscores the importance of diverse voices in creating nuanced and impactful media coverage.
