Mahama Nominates Diana Ayamga as Bongo DCE Following Vacancy

President John Dramani Mahama has nominated Diana Asoketarige Ayamga as the new District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Bongo District Assembly in the Upper East Region, in a move aimed at strengthening local governance and ensuring continuity in district administration.

The nomination was officially communicated in a letter dated April 7, 2026, and signed by Callistus Mahama on behalf of the President. The appointment was made in accordance with Article 243 of the 1992 Constitution and the provisions of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), as amended.

According to the communication, the nomination is intended to fill a vacancy created in the Bongo District Assembly following the untimely passing of former DCE, Joseph Abaa Akaseke. His demise left a leadership gap in the district, prompting swift action from the Presidency to ensure administrative stability.

In an interview, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Bongo Constituency Communications Officer, Edward Asekere Abesiwine, confirmed the nomination, describing it as a positive development for the district. He noted that the nominee is expected to bring renewed energy and commitment to local governance if approved.

“The information is true, and we are hopeful that the Assembly members will give her the needed support to continue the developmental agenda of the district,” he stated.

Per Ghana’s decentralisation framework, the nominee must secure the approval of at least two-thirds of members of the Bongo District Assembly before officially assuming office as DCE.

The nomination of Diana Ayamga forms part of a broader government effort to reinforce district-level leadership across the country, particularly in areas where vacancies have emerged. Analysts believe such appointments are crucial in maintaining the momentum of local development projects and ensuring effective service delivery at the grassroots level.

If approved, Diana Asoketarige Ayamga will take over the administration of the Bongo District, with the responsibility of coordinating government policies, overseeing development initiatives, and working closely with traditional authorities and stakeholders to advance the district’s socio-economic growth.

Her confirmation would mark a new chapter for the Bongo District Assembly as it seeks to recover from recent leadership challenges and reposition itself for accelerated development.
