The Upper East Regional minister Honourable Donatus Akamugre Atanga raised serious concerns over the rising cases of prostitution and drug abuse in Bolgatanga, warning that the growing trend poses a significant threat to the social and moral fabric of the community.
Delivering his message during the celebration of Eid al-Fitr on March 20, 2026, the minister used the occasion to call for reflection and collective responsibility in addressing the worrying situation, particularly among the youth.
“As we celebrate the Eid al-Fitr today I call on the youth to take interest in their personal development and not other ungodly activities ” the minister advised.
He described the increasing involvement of young people—especially girls—in commercial sex activities as deeply troubling, noting that such practices undermine the values of discipline and dignity that the festive season seeks to promote. According to him, the visible rise in prostitution across parts of the municipality demands urgent attention.

The minister further linked the situation to the growing abuse of drugs and other harmful substances, which he said continue to fuel risky behaviours, including unsafe sexual practices. He cautioned that if immediate steps are not taken, the trend could escalate into broader social challenges.
“These developments, if left unchecked, could result in increased crime, rising teenage pregnancies, and a surge in sexually transmitted infections,” he warned, stressing that such outcomes would place a heavy burden on families and public institutions.
He therefore called on parents, traditional leaders, religious authorities, and security agencies to intensify efforts in tackling the menace. He emphasised the importance of public education, moral guidance, and community vigilance in curbing both drug abuse and prostitution.
The minister also underscored the need for sustainable youth empowerment initiatives, including job creation and skills development, as a long-term solution to addressing the root causes of the problem.
He urged the public to use the spirit of Eid al-Fitr—a period of renewal, discipline, and compassion—to recommit to building a safer and more responsible society.
The minister concluded by stressing that safeguarding the future of young people in Bolgatanga must remain a shared priority, requiring unity and sustained action from all stakeholders.
