National Road Safety Authority Reports 51 Deaths in Upper East Region from January to September

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has reported alarming statistics on road incidents in the Upper East Region from January to September 2025. During this period, a total of 51 fatalities resulting from road accidents were recorded — a slight decline from the 54 deaths documented during the same period last year. This year also saw 80 reported road crashes, down from 95 incidents in 2024. Additionally, 119 injuries were recorded in 2025, an improvement over last year’s figure of 135.

In an exclusive interview on the BlueWaves Breakfast Show, Ing. John Quarshie, the Regional Public Relations Officer for the NRSA in the Upper East Region, expressed deep concern about the figures. While he acknowledged the decline in fatalities, he emphasized that the numbers remain worrying and called for urgent public adherence to road safety regulations. Quarshie stressed that the ultimate goal is to achieve zero deaths on the roads in the coming year.

A major factor contributing to these accidents, he noted, is speeding, coupled with the disturbing trend of riders failing to wear protective gear — particularly among motorcyclists. Quarshie revealed that out of the 137 vehicles involved in these accidents, 90 were motorbikes, underscoring a worrying trend that could have even more dire consequences if not addressed promptly.

Breaking down the demographics of the 51 fatalities, Quarshie reported that 37 of the deceased were males and 14 were females, all aged 14 and above. This data paints a heartbreaking picture, highlighting the significant number of widows and widowers left behind due to the devastating impact of road accidents.

Madam Adelaide Marfo, the Assistant Planning Manager for the NRSA, also urged road users to exercise maximum caution when navigating the roads. She stressed the importance of wearing crash helmets, advocating for the enforcement of mandatory helmet use nationwide. Marfo emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility and urged everyone to comply with traffic regulations to ensure the safety of all road users.
