NPP Flagbearership: Bawumia Merits Second Chance — Former Upper East Regional Executives

A group of former regional executives of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region have endorsed former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the party’s presidential flagbearership, arguing that he deserves a second opportunity to lead the party into the 2028 general elections.

The endorsement was announced at a press conference held at the NPP’s Upper East Regional Office, where the group declared its collective support for Dr. Bawumia ahead of the party’s upcoming presidential primary.

Although fewer than a dozen members were physically present at the event, the group indicated that the endorsement represents a total of 35 former regional executives drawn from across the region. The signatories include former regional chairpersons and vice chairpersons, regional secretaries, organisers, youth and women organisers and their deputies, as well as former communications directors.

In a joint statement, the former executives said their decision followed “careful scrutiny” of all five aspirants contesting the party’s presidential slot.

“We, the former regional executives of the New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region, after careful consideration of the five aspirants and deep reflection driven by our unwavering love for the party and our collective desire to recapture political power, have come to the firm conclusion that Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia represents the best possible choice for the NPP in 2028,” the statement said.

According to the group, their support for Dr. Bawumia is anchored on his leadership qualities, national appeal, experience in government, competence, character, and long-term vision for Ghana’s development.

Addressing the press, former Upper East Regional Communications Director, Issah Sanusi, said Dr. Bawumia’s tenure as Vice President has equipped him with the depth of experience required to lead the party and the country.

He described the former Vice President as a visionary leader capable of driving inclusive development and sustainable socio-economic transformation.

“Dr. Bawumia’s track record in public service, combined with his personal attributes and understanding of governance, places him in a unique position to unify the party and appeal to a broad spectrum of voters,” Mr. Sanusi noted.

The former executives also referenced the NPP’s historical practice of maintaining confidence in candidates after an initial electoral loss, arguing that the strategy has often yielded electoral success.

“Having led the party into the 2024 elections, he brings invaluable experience. As has been the tradition of our party, he deserves a second opportunity. Political consistency remains a proven winning strategy,” the group emphasized.

Dr. Bawumia, who led the NPP into the 2024 general elections where the party lost power, is currently facing competition from four other aspirants in the race for the party’s presidential candidacy. The NPP has scheduled its presidential primary for January 31, 2026.

Despite the competition, the former Upper East Regional Executives insist that Dr. Bawumia remains the standout candidate.

“Among the five contesting candidates, Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia stands out as the most prepared and credible option to lead the NPP back to victory,” the statement concluded.
