A member of the Upper East Regional Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Yussi Ahmed Abdulai, has asserted that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lacks the moral authority to criticise the current government over recent fuel price adjustments.
According to him, the opposition party is not in a position to question government decisions on fuel pricing, given its own record in managing the economy during its eight years in office.
Speaking on the Bluewaves Breakfast Show on BlueWaves Radio 93.7 on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Mr. Abdulai explained that global factors, particularly tensions in the Middle East, are significantly influencing fuel prices.
He noted that a substantial portion of the world’s fuel supply passes through the Strait of Hormuz, which has been affected by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.
“I heard the Minority in Parliament demanding the removal of the one Ghana cedi energy sector levy, which I find surprising. I really doubt their sincerity on critical national issues like this,” he said.
Mr. Abdulai further accused the NPP of being overly critical and, in some instances, appearing to wish ill for the country, a situation he described as unfortunate.
Drawing comparisons with the Russia-Ukraine War, he argued that although global crises have impacted economies worldwide, the previous administration did not shield Ghanaians from economic hardship despite benefiting from certain global conditions.
He maintained that the current NDC administration is implementing forward-looking, homegrown policies to mitigate future fuel shocks. Among these, he highlighted efforts to revitalise the Tema Oil Refinery to strengthen local capacity in managing fuel supply challenges.
Mr. Abdulai emphasised that the NDC government remains committed to stabilising the economy and will not rely on guidance from the NPP on economic management.
