The Upper East Regional Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Peter Ayinbisa, has defended the previous NPP administration’s record on the Bolgatanga–Bawku road project, stating that the government completed over 80 percent of the work before leaving office despite significant financial constraints.
Speaking on the BlueWaves Breakfast Show, Mr. Ayinbisa acknowledged that the NPP government encountered serious economic challenges during its tenure, which affected the pace of work on some major infrastructure projects, including the Bolgatanga–Bawku road. However, he maintained that considerable progress was made under difficult circumstances.
“Our government faced financial limitations at a point, which affected ongoing projects, but we were still able to execute about 80 percent of the Bolga–Bawku road before leaving power,” he stated.
Mr. Ayinbisa expressed concern over what he described as a lack of visible progress on the project since the National Democratic Congress (NDC) assumed office. According to him, more than one and a half years into the current administration, there has been little to no activity on site.
“It is worrying that after over a year and a half in office, there is no contractor working on the road. This is very sad, considering the importance of that road to the people of the Upper East Region,” he lamented.
He further criticised suggestions by the current government to adopt what he described as “temporary measures” in addressing the condition of the road, arguing that such approaches are inadequate and could compromise the long-term quality and durability of the project.
Mr. Ayinbisa emphasised the strategic importance of the Bolgatanga–Bawku road, noting that it serves as a critical link for economic activities, trade, and transportation within the region and beyond. He therefore called on the government to prioritise the completion of the project and ensure that it is executed to a high standard.
The Bolgatanga–Bawku road remains a key infrastructure project in the Upper East Region, with residents and road users continuing to call for its timely completion to ease transportation challenges and boost local economic development.
