The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Talensi, Hon. John Millim Nabwomya, has called on residents of Tongo and surrounding communities to remain security conscious following a series of armed robbery incidents that occurred on Sunday evening.
Speaking in an interview on BlueWaves Radio, Hon. Nabwomya expressed deep concern over what he described as a troubling spike in criminal activity within the district, particularly around the Tongo township and its environs.
According to the DCE, unknown armed men carried out coordinated robbery attacks at the Tongo market between approximately 6:00pm and 7:00pm on Sunday, January 25, 2026. The assailants reportedly targeted three individuals, including two mobile money (MoMo) vendors and an operator of a food joint, robbing them of cash and other valuables.
The robbery spree did not end at the market. Hon. Nabwomya disclosed that while fleeing the scene, the armed robbers moved along the Baare–Gambibgo stretch, where they attacked another victim from Tengzuk. The victim, who was reportedly waiting for a friend near the Baare/Sakpare parliamentary area, was dispossessed of his motorbike and a mobile phone.
“These incidents are worrying and unacceptable,” the DCE stated, stressing that the safety of residents remains a top priority for the district administration.
Hon. Nabwomya confirmed that the Ghana Police Service, through the Tongo District Command, has swiftly moved into action. He revealed that several suspects have already been arrested in connection with the attacks and have been transferred to the Upper East Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further investigations.
While assuring residents of intensified security measures, the DCE appealed to the public to remain alert and cooperative with security agencies. He urged community members to report suspicious movements promptly and to adopt personal safety precautions, especially during evening hours.
“We are working closely with the security agencies, particularly the police, to address the situation decisively. Residents should remain calm but vigilant, and expect stronger security interventions in the coming days,” Hon. Nabwomya added.
The recent incidents have heightened anxiety among traders and residents in the area, particularly MoMo vendors and small business operators, who are increasingly becoming targets of armed robbery across parts of the Upper East Region.
