Talensi MP Calls on Agricultural Stakeholders to Help Make Farming Attractive to the Youth

The Member of Parliament for the Talensi Constituency, Hon. Daniel Dung Mahama, has called on government and key stakeholders in the agriculture sector to collaborate in making farming more lucrative and appealing to the youth.

Hon. Mahama made the appeal during this year’s Talensi District Farmers’ Day celebration, where he presented a tricycle—popularly known as a motorking—to the Talensi District Assembly to support the 2025 Best Farmers’ Awards.

The MP’s donation, which is crucial for transporting farm produce and inputs across the district, enabled the District Assembly under the leadership of the District Chief Executive, Hon. John Millim Nabwomya, to increase this year’s award package from the usual one motorking to a record four. This marks the highest number of tricycles ever awarded since the creation of the Talensi District Assembly in 2004.

In his address, Hon. Mahama praised the resilience and hard work of farmers in the district, describing them as the backbone of food production in both the constituency and the nation.

He further appealed to government—through the Upper East Regional Minister, Hon. Donatus Akamugre Atanga, and the Regional Director of Agriculture, who both attended the event—to consider Talensi District in the rollout of the Farmers’ Service Centre initiative. According to him, farming in Talensi is not only an economic activity but also “an identity and heritage” for the people.

Hon. Mahama’s passionate advocacy received immediate attention, prompting the Regional Minister to announce, even before delivering his official speech, that Talensi District would indeed be included in the Farmers’ Service Centre programme. The announcement was met with loud cheers and applause from the gathering.

The MP reaffirmed his unwavering support for farmers in the constituency and pledged to champion initiatives that promote agricultural productivity. He also expressed profound gratitude to the Regional Minister and the Regional Director of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture for selecting Talensi District to host this year’s regional celebration, describing the decision as appropriate and historic.

The Talensi District Farmers’ Awards concluded with the following recipients taking the top honours:

  1. Gordon Zoogah – Overall Best Farmer
  2. Hon. Cletus Musah Anafo – First Runner-Up
  3. Ms. Annabelle Tampoar – Second Runner-Up
  4. Mr. Ayenzeleya Morgan – Best Crop Farmer

“In Talensi, farming is not just a job; it is our identity,” Hon. Daniel Dung Mahama remarked as he concluded his message.
