The Secretary-General of the Trades Union Congress (Ghana), Joshua Ansah, has called on workers across Ghana to take a keen interest in understanding the national pension system, stressing that pension education is essential for ensuring financial security after retirement.
Mr. Ansah made the call while addressing stakeholders during a SSNIT/TUC regional engagement forum, where discussions focused on strengthening awareness and participation in the country’s pension scheme.

According to him, the SSNIT/TUC programs serve as an important platform for bringing the conversation about pensions closer to workers across the country. He noted that such engagements demonstrate a shared commitment by labour unions and pension administrators to ensure that every worker fully understands the value and benefits of the national pension system managed by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust.
“Pensions are not only about retirement; they represent dignity, security, and protection for workers after years of dedicated service,” Mr. Ansah emphasized.
He further stressed that pension literacy should not be treated as a luxury, but rather as a necessity for every worker. According to him, when workers understand how the pension system works, they are better equipped to protect their future and contribute to the sustainability of the scheme.
Mr. Ansah urged workers to actively seek knowledge about their pension contributions, benefits, and rights, explaining that an informed workforce helps strengthen the long-term stability of the pension system.
The TUC Secretary-General, however, acknowledged that awareness about pensions remains limited among many workers, particularly those operating within Ghana’s vast informal sector. He indicated that extending pension coverage to millions of informal sector workers remains one of the major challenges facing the system.
Despite these challenges, Mr. Ansah assured stakeholders that the Trades Union Congress would continue to leverage its nationwide structures to promote pension education and awareness among workers.
He reiterated the union’s commitment to ensuring that no worker in Ghana retires into poverty or uncertainty after dedicating years of service to national development.
The forum forms part of ongoing nationwide efforts by SSNIT and the TUC to deepen pension literacy and encourage broader participation in the national pension scheme.
