Volta Regional Health Directorate Probes Driver Arrest Over Alleged Narcotic Possession

The Volta Regional Health Directorate has moved swiftly to address public concern following reports of the arrest of one of its drivers in connection with the alleged unlawful possession or control of suspected narcotic substances.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Directorate confirmed that it had been notified of the arrest of Mr. Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, a driver attached to the Directorate, after a news item concerning the incident began circulating widely on social media.

According to the statement, the Directorate’s Transport Unit received information on Friday, January 23, 2026, that Mr. Dogbey had been arrested and detained at the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho. The arrest followed allegations that he was driving an official vehicle belonging to the Directorate, with registration number GV 2460-14, which was reportedly carrying items suspected to be narcotic drugs.

Management of the Regional Health Directorate, upon learning of the development, immediately dispatched a team to the police headquarters to verify the information and gather preliminary details. The police subsequently confirmed the arrest, indicating that the driver remains in custody and is currently assisting with ongoing investigations.

While the Ghana Police Service continues its probe into the matter, the Volta Regional Health Directorate says it has initiated its own internal processes to ensure accountability. Management has begun steps to set up a Committee of Enquiry to independently investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In addition, the Directorate announced plans to tighten control measures within the institution, including enhanced monitoring and tracking of all official vehicles, in order to prevent similar occurrences in the future.

The Directorate reiterated its commitment to integrity, accountability, and professionalism, stressing that it will not compromise on standards in the delivery of public health services.

The statement was signed by the Volta Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Emmanuel Atsu Dodor.
