Zuarungu NMTC Principal Clarifies Stance on TESCON Programme

The Principal of the Zuarungu Nursing and Midwifery Training College, Alhaji Tahiru Haruna, has refuted claims circulating in the media suggesting that he indefinitely suspended a scheduled programme by the TESCON.

The programme, reportedly planned for March 28th, 2026, was intended to welcome fresh students into the student wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on campus.

A statement attributed to the Upper East Regional Youth Wing of the NPP had earlier alleged that the college authorities had halted the programme, raising concerns among party supporters.

However, in a phone interview with a journalist from BlueWaves Radio 93.7, Alhaji Tahiru Haruna clarified that his actions had been misunderstood.

“I think I am misunderstood. I only advised my students to organise it like students and limit the number of outsiders coming into the school,” he explained.

According to the Principal, his directive was not intended to sabotage any political activity on campus but rather to ensure that such events remain student-led and do not disrupt the academic environment.

He emphasised that while students have the right to associate and organise politically, such activities must be conducted responsibly and within the confines of institutional regulations.

“I am also a voter, and I understand political affiliations. I will not stop people from organising their political activities in the school,” he noted.
“But it should be done in such a way that outsiders are not brought in.”

Alhaji Haruna expressed concern over what he described as attempts to turn student programmes into large-scale political rallies by inviting external participants and mounting public address systems.

“If it is just students welcoming their juniors to join the party, what should be the problem?” he questioned.
“But going out to invite people and mounting big speakers as if it is a political rally— for that, I will advise it is not appropriate.”

He reiterated that his primary responsibility is to maintain discipline, order, and a conducive learning environment within the college, stressing that all student activities must align with these principles.

The clarification comes amid growing discussions about the balance between political engagement and academic discipline within tertiary institutions.
