The Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities of Ghana (VCTU-G) has suspended Bolgatanga Technical University (BTU) from all activities of the association over what it describes as a deepening governance crisis at the institutio
The decision is contained in an official letter dated June 26, 2026, cited by BlueWaves Radio, and signed by the Chairman of VCTU-G, Ing. Prof. Kwadwo Adinkrah-Appiah, following a meeting of the association held on *June 15, 2026.
According to the letter, the association reviewed recent developments at BTU, particularly the processes that led to the suspension, investigation and eventual termination of the appointment of the University’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa. It also took into account the subsequent demotion of two other senior officers and the issuance of a warning letter to another university official by the BTU Governing Council.
VCTU-G noted that it exists to promote peaceful coexistence among Ghana’s Technical Universities, safeguard institutional autonomy, strengthen governance systems and create conducive learning and working environments for both students and staff.
However, after examining the circumstances surrounding the impasse at BTU, the association expressed grave concern over what it described as the University’s prolonged governance crisis.
According to the letter, VCTU-G made several attempts to facilitate dialogue between the parties involved in the dispute. These efforts, including attempts to secure an audience with the leadership of the BTU Governing Council, were unsuccessful, thereby limiting the association’s ability to mediate and help resolve the conflict.
The association further alleged that the BTU Governing Council had disregarded several directives issued by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), which were intended to resolve the stalemate at the University.
It further described the Council’s actions as an unprecedented exercise of authority that threatens long-established principles of university governance.
VCTU-G also referenced a recent directive by the President of the Republic, which instructed boards and board chairpersons of public institutions to confine themselves to policy direction and oversight responsibilities rather than becoming directly involved in the day-to-day management of public institutions. According to the association, the actions of the BTU Governing Council appear to be inconsistent with that directive.
Consequently, VCTU-G announced the immediate suspension of Bolgatanga Technical University from all activities of the association until the matter is fully resolved.
The association said the decision was taken to help restore peace and progress at the University while safeguarding the integrity and cohesion of Ghana’s Technical University system.
VCTU-G stressed that the decision was not taken lightly, expressing hope that the period of suspension would create an opportunity for reflection, constructive engagement and the restoration of confidence in the University’s governance processes.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the integrity, dignity and autonomy of Technical Universities across Ghana through dialogue and constructive engagement.
Copies of the letter were forwarded to the Minister for Education, the Director-General of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), the Director of Tertiary Education at the Ministry of Education, all Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities, Prof. Samuel Erasmus Alnaa, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of Bolgatanga Technical University and the Executive Secretary of VCTU-G.
The latest development marks a significant escalation in the governance dispute at Bolgatanga Technical University and is expected to generate further debate among stakeholders over the institution’s leadership and governance.
BlueWaves Radio will continue to monitor developments surrounding the BTU governance impasse and provide updates as more information becomes available.
