Sheaga Assembly Member Call On Anti-Corruption Crusaders Over Alleged RTI Violations by Talensi District Assembly

The Assembly Member for the Sheaga Electoral Area in the Talensi District of the Upper East Region, Hon. Augustine Mmi-oni Guure, has called on anti-corruption campaigners and civil society organisations to intervene in what he describes as the Talensi District Assembly’s persistent refusal to comply with the Right to Information (RTI) Act.

Hon. Guure, who also serves as *Chairman of the Assembly’s Sub-Security and Justice Committee, expressed deep concern over the Assembly’s failure to release critical public information despite a formal RTI request submitted on *5th January 2026.

According to him, the request sought details on two key governance areas:

  • the utilisation of funds allocated to Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), including the criteria and processes used in selecting beneficiaries; and
  • information on SOCO projects undertaken in the district, covering their implementation status from 2020 to date.

He noted that several weeks after submitting the request, the Assembly has neither acknowledged nor responded to it, a situation he described as a clear breach of the RTI law.

“Is the Talensi District Assembly more powerful than the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana?” Hon. Guure questioned, expressing frustration over what he termed a deliberate disregard for the law.

The Sheaga Assembly Member stressed that access to such information is essential for transparency, accountability, and effective oversight at the local government level, particularly in matters involving public funds and social intervention projects.

Hon. Guure warned that he may be forced to pursue legal action should the Assembly continue to withhold the requested information. He further appealed to anti-corruption crusaders, transparency advocates, and governance watchdogs to come to his aid in demanding accountability on behalf of the people of Talensi.

“This fight is not just about me as an Assembly Member, but about protecting the public interest and ensuring that public resources are managed fairly and transparently,” he said.

The Talensi District Assembly has yet to publicly respond to the allegations.
