Concerns Raised Over Contextualisation of President’s LGBTQ+ Remarks – Talensi NDC Secretary Responds

The Talensi Constituency Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and a member of the party’s Upper East Regional Communications Team, Hon. Augustine Mmi-oni Guure, has defended remarks made by President John Dramani Mahama, stating that they have been widely misconstrued by sections of the public.

According to him, the President he knows does not support LGBTQ+ activities, and therefore urged Ghanaians to disregard what he described as misleading interpretations circulating in the public domain.

His comments follow a recent engagement between President Mahama and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) at the Jubilee House, where the President reportedly indicated that discussions around homosexuality should not take precedence over more pressing national concerns. He emphasised the need to focus on critical livelihood issues such as food security and economic stability for Ghanaians.

Speaking on the Bluewaves Breakfast Show, Hon. Guure reiterated that the government’s immediate priority should be the creation and sustainability of jobs for the youth. He stressed that improving economic conditions would naturally steer young people away from engaging in what he described as “undesirable acts.”

“Sometimes it is not about rushing to take a stand, but ensuring that issues are addressed comprehensively and permanently. That is what the President seeks to achieve,” he stated.

Hon. Guure further assured the public of the President’s commitment to addressing the matter appropriately. He also noted what he described as a significant decline in reported cases of such activities compared to previous years, a development he commended.
