David Asanga Awine, aspirant for the position of Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Bongo Constituency, has outlined a vision centred on empowering polling station executives, mentoring emerging talents, and ensuring deliberate succession within the party’s communication structures.
Speaking on the Bluewaves Breakfast Show, Awine said his priority would be to organise and build the capacity of communication officers at the branch and polling station levels. “We are not just going to fill positions; we are going to look at your potential,” he stated. “If I know you can do the work, I will bring you up, so that one day, if I am not there, there are others who can continue the good job of the NDC.”
He emphasised the need for a strong, motivated grassroots team capable of effectively countering what he described as the “vile propaganda” of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Addressing questions about why he continues to seek the same communication role rather than aiming higher, Awine pointed to the political realities of succession. He recalled that he entered the position after someone else held it and later lost it in 2022 to his younger brother, Patrick, after earlier defeating him in a contest. “That is the nature of politics. It is not a personal competition or a feud,” he said, noting that the two remain brothers and that he had encouraged Patrick to aim higher when the latter declared his intention to contest.
Awine made a clear commitment on succession: after winning the upcoming election, he would deliberately create space for others. “It doesn’t matter whether I am older or they are younger; we must have a new pair of hands to try their ability,” he declared. “When we keep sitting at the top of the tree, we kill so many talents.” He argued that polling station communication officers should have a clear path to rise to constituency level roles, describing this as the way to unlock untapped potential within the party.
Reflecting on his own journey, Awine credited the late District Chief Executive for Bongo, Hon. Joseph Akasake Abaa, with bringing him into the limelight. “I came from the grassroots. I came under the mentorship of the late DCE for Bongo, Hon. Akasake Joseph Abaa. He discovered me. I was nowhere. He tried me, and I delivered,” Awine said, adding that the late leader would be proud of the progress he has made.
In closing, Awine appealed directly to delegates and the people of Bongo, asserting that he is the candidate best positioned to strengthen the constituency’s communication wing. “There is no other voice apart from David Asanga Awine who will take over the communication wing and make it brighter. I am ready to serve, ready to mentor, and ready to win,” he stated.
The remarks come as internal NDC contests intensify ahead of constituency elections, with candidates seeking to demonstrate both organisational capacity and a commitment to broadening participation within party structures.
