“Power Is Our Goal” – Paul Afoko Expresses Confidence in Bawumia’s Presidential Prospects

New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful Awentami Paul Afoko has expressed confidence that the party can return to power and see former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia elected President, insisting that unity and organizational renewal are essential to achieving that goal.

Addressing party faithful during engagements in the Volta, Oti, and Central Regions, Mr. Afoko said his decision to return and contest for the party’s national chairmanship was motivated not by personal ambition but by a desire to help reposition the NPP for electoral victory.

“I didn’t leave my retirement to come in for any reason other than power. Power is all we want, so that we can use power to develop our country according to the way we see it,” he told supporters.

According to Mr. Afoko, the NPP’s founding ideals and political philosophy remain relevant to Ghana’s development agenda. However, he argued that the party must first address its internal divisions and strengthen its structures before it can regain the confidence of the electorate.

He urged long-serving members and party elders not to remain passive in the face of the party’s recent electoral setbacks, warning that inaction could further weaken the organization they have spent decades building.

“If we sit back, especially you, the elders, and fold your hands, the party that you have toiled for from your youth is on a trajectory downwards,” he said.

Mr. Afoko pointed to the party’s decline in parliamentary representation—from 169 seats to 87—as evidence that urgent reforms are needed.

“We are now at 87 from 169. We all must stand up and say this party must turn the corner and go up,” he urged.

Central to his campaign is what he describes as the *“3Rs” agenda: *Reunite, Rebuild, and Recapture.

He explained that the first priority is to reunite the party by reconciling factions and bringing back estranged members under a common purpose. Once unity is restored, the next step would be to rebuild the party’s grassroots structures—from polling station executives to the national level—to strengthen mobilization and internal organization.

According to Mr. Afoko, these efforts would lay the foundation for the third objective: recapturing political power and returning the NPP to government in the 2028 general elections.

Expressing optimism about the party’s future, Mr. Afoko declared that he believes “Bawumia’s presidency is coming,” maintaining that a united and well-organized NPP would be well positioned to secure victory at the polls.
