The Bolgatanga Goodwill Rotary Club has presented dual desks estimated at GH¢27,000 to Kanga Primary School in the Zorkor enclave of the Bongo District to ease severe furniture shortages at the school.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Club President Alexis Adugdaa Ayamdor said the intervention followed community appeals and a needs assessment conducted by the club.
“Out of an enrollment of over 200 pupils, the school had only about 27 dual desks, which are woefully inadequate. This means the majority of the children were sitting on the floor,” Mr. Ayamdor stated, confirming the situation earlier highlighted by the head teacher.
He explained that the assessment findings prompted the club to mobilise resources and provide the furniture as a practical response to the infrastructure challenges facing the school.
Mr. Ayamdor noted that the donation is part of the club’s broader commitment to supporting communities in the Upper East Region. He recalled that Rotary Goodwill has implemented several water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) projects in the Bongo District and is currently executing a major WASH intervention in the Kalbeo community within the Bolgatanga Municipality.
The Kalbeo project involves the construction of 80 household latrines (now nearly 90 per cent complete) and a mechanised borehole designed to supply water to the entire community.
Addressing community members, school authorities and other stakeholders at the event, the Rotary president stressed the importance of sustainability. He disclosed that the community made a modest contribution towards the procurement of the desks and that the school management, Parent-Teacher Association, teachers, SMC members and circuit supervisors had given verbal commitments to maintain
the furniture.
“For Rotary interventions, the ability to attract further support depends on how well previous donations are kept. We will undertake periodic monitoring to assess the condition of these facilities,” Mr. Ayamdor said, adding that the partnership with the Kanga community would continue.
The presentation was attended by District Chief Executive ,the Ghana Education Service Directot and representatives of the Bongo District Assembly, school authorities and community leaders.
