UE/R: NDC’s Vitus Apana Cautions NPP Against Violent Rhetoric During Media Engagements

A member of the Upper East Regional Communications Team of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Vitus A. Apana, has cautioned members of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) against making comments that could incite violence and threaten the country’s democratic stability.

Speaking in an interview on Yem Radio, Mr. Apana expressed concern over what he described as inflammatory comments allegedly made by some members of the NPP during recent media discussions. According to him, Ghana’s democratic growth and peace must not be undermined by reckless political utterances capable of creating tension in the country.

Mr. Apana questioned the moral authority of the NPP to heavily criticize the current NDC administration while, in his view, some of their members continue to make statements that could provoke unrest.

He particularly condemned comments suggesting that if any NPP member is arrested, party supporters would retaliate by attacking or burning properties belonging to the NDC. He further referenced statements allegedly threatening to make the country “ungovernable” for the current government.

According to Mr. Apana, such remarks are dangerous and unacceptable in a democratic society governed by the rule of law.

“We have come a long way as a country under the Fourth Republic, and our democracy must be protected at all costs. The 1992 Constitution guarantees freedom of speech, but that freedom should not be abused to promote violence or lawlessness,” he stated.

He stressed that Ghana’s democratic institutions must be respected by all political actors regardless of party affiliation, adding that no individual or political group should attempt to destabilize the peace of the nation through provocative comments.

Mr. Apana used the platform to caution members of the NPP to exercise restraint in their public engagements and avoid comments that could heighten political tension. He maintained that while the NDC believes in democratic freedoms and open political discourse, the party would not tolerate threats or acts intended to intimidate the government or create instability.

The NDC communicator further urged political parties and their supporters to prioritize peace, unity, and national development over partisan confrontations, especially as the country continues to strengthen its democratic credentials.
