The Upper East Regional Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Madam Fawzia Abagnamah Yakubu, has encouraged young women across the country to boldly pursue leadership positions despite the numerous challenges associated with politics and public service.
According to her, the political landscape in Ghana remains highly demanding and largely dominated by men, making it necessary for women who aspire to leadership to demonstrate courage, resilience, confidence, and determination.
Madam Yakubu made the call during the Upper East Regional Youth and Tertiary Education Institutions Network (TEIN) Conference held at the Bolgatanga Nursing Training College on May 23, 2026.
The conference, held under the theme, “Building the Next Generation of Leaders: From Campuses to Communities – The Reset Agenda,” brought together youth leaders, TEIN executives, students, and party supporters to discuss leadership development, youth empowerment, and active participation in governance.
Addressing participants at the conference, Madam Yakubu urged young women not to allow societal perceptions, criticism, or intimidation to discourage them from aspiring to leadership positions.
She emphasized that women possess the competence and potential to excel in leadership when given the opportunity and proper support.
According to her, many people admire political leaders because of the influence and recognition associated with public office, but often fail to appreciate the sacrifices, pressure, and responsibilities that come with leadership.
“People admire leaders because of the positions they occupy, but they do not always see the sacrifices and challenges behind the success,” she stated.
Madam Yakubu stressed that successful leadership is not built on popularity or luck alone but rather through discipline, consistency, mental strength, sacrifice, and deliberate preparation.
She advised young people, particularly female students and emerging leaders, to begin preparing themselves early for future leadership responsibilities by developing their confidence, communication skills, and ability to withstand pressure.
The Regional Women’s Organiser further encouraged young women with political ambitions not to limit themselves but rather aspire to occupy higher national offices, including positions such as Members of Parliament, Ministers of State, and even the Vice Presidency.
According to her, women must begin to see themselves as capable leaders who can contribute meaningfully to national development and decision-making.
She also reminded participants that challenges are not unique to politics alone, explaining that every profession comes with obstacles that require commitment, patience, and perseverance to overcome.
“Every profession has its own difficulties and challenges. What matters most is your determination, focus, and willingness to keep moving forward despite the obstacles,” she advised.
Madam Yakubu further called on young people to remain disciplined, responsible, and committed to personal growth while taking advantage of opportunities within the party and educational institutions to build leadership capacity.
The conference formed part of the NDC’s broader Reset Agenda aimed at grooming the next generation of leaders and strengthening youth participation in governance and community development.
Participants at the conference engaged in discussions centered on youth empowerment, political participation, leadership mentorship, educational opportunities, and the role of young people in national development.
Many attendees described the conference as insightful and inspiring, particularly the message encouraging women and the youth to take active roles in leadership and public service.
