Boakye Agyarko Dismisses Claims of Rift with Bawumia, Pledges to Build Strong Party StructureBolgatanga, Upper East Region – June 24, 2026.

As part of his nationwide stakeholder engagement tour, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful Boakye Agyarko granted an exclusive interview to the Political Show and Development Programme host, Fauzia Abitor Haruna, on Bluewaves Radio in Bolgatanga.

The wide-ranging interview touched on the current state of the NPP, the ongoing reorganization of the party, Mr. Agyarko’s vision for the NPP, his relationship with the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and other issues affecting the party.

During the interview, Mr. Agyarko made significant revelations about the importance of a strong working relationship between a party Chairman and its Flagbearer. He argued that such a relationship is essential for electoral success.

Responding to questions about whether a party Chairman must maintain a cordial relationship with the flagbearer, Mr. Agyarko answered in the affirmative.

“That is a requirement. You cannot belong to an organization and say you cannot maintain a good working relationship with the people around you, especially your flagbearer, whose name will be on the ballot as you seek political power,” he said.

He compared the situation to working in the civil or public service, where constant conflict with one’s superior would make continued service impossible.

“If you are always at loggerheads with your boss, you are likely to be sacked because it means the organization cannot contain you,” he explained.

Mr. Agyarko also addressed widespread speculation that there is a strained relationship between him and Dr. Bawumia, firmly rejecting such claims.

“I have worked with Bawumia for many years. In 2008, when he was the running mate, I worked closely with him. Although we did not win that election, I served as Campaign Manager and worked hand in hand with him throughout the campaign,” he stated.

He further recounted their collaboration during the 2016 elections.
“After the election petition, I served as a policy adviser while Dr. Bawumia chaired the Manifesto Committee. We worked closely together on policy and manifesto development.
When we won power, I became a Minister and a member of the Economic Management Team. At no point did we have any conflict, confrontation, or serious disagreement. Not once. Sometimes I wonder where these speculations come from.”

Chairman and Flagbearer Roles Are Complementary

The Chairman Aspirant stressed that the roles of party Chairman and flagbearer are complementary and should never be seen as competing positions.

According to him, his focus is solely on becoming National Chairman and helping to build a stronger party machinery capable of delivering victory for the flagbearer.

He urged party members and supporters to disregard rumours and remain focused on strengthening the NPP ahead of future elections.

“My mission as chairman is clear. My task is to unite the party and build a formidable structure upon which Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, our undisputed flagbearer, can ride to victory,” he said.
Mr. Agyarko added that the party’s performance in the 2024 elections demonstrated the importance of a strong and united party organization and that strengthening the party’s structures would be a key priority under his leadership.
