The Bongo District Director of Education, Mr. Michael Nyaaba Ayamdor, has described the donation of dual desks by the Bolgatanga Goodwill Rotary Club as a major boost to education delivery in the district, while using the occasion to appeal to parents to invest in their children’s schooling.
Speaking on behalf of the Ghana Education Service (GES) directorates, teachers, School Management Committees (SMCs) and Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) at the handover ceremony at Kanga Primary School, Mr. Ayamdor identified furniture shortage as one of the biggest challenges confronting schools under his watch.
He explained that while teacher shortages can be managed through multi-grade teaching where two classes share one teacher and classroom, the absence of furniture creates far greater difficulties.
“When furniture is not available and you gather two classes into one room, the children become so many. Some sit on the floor; others cannot even find space to sit. When it is time to write, they have to lie on their bellies, and because of limited space, many cannot write at all,” he said.
Mr. Ayamdor, who assumed office in 2025, recounted an emotional experience during his familiarisation tour of schools. At Abelizanga Primary School in the Namoo Circuit, he found pupils lying on their stomachs to learn.
“I almost wept. When I wanted to speak, tears started coming from my eyes and I could not even talk. I became so emotional,” he recalled, emphasising that furniture remains a critical need across many schools in the district.
Expressing deep gratitude to Rotary Club Goodwill for the gesture, the director seized the opportunity presented by the large parental turnout to deliver a strong message on the value of education.
Drawing from his personal story, Mr. Ayamdor shared how, as a child, some of his siblings stayed home to tend the family’s cattle while he went to school. Today, he noted, the cattle are gone, yet the education he acquired has enabled him to acquire far more.
“With what I have invested in my head, if I want to buy 10 cows within one year, I can do it. That is the investment that lasts,” he told parents.
He urged them to prioritise their children’s education, stressing that it is the greatest investment any parent can make. “When you take care of your child well, that child becomes an equal to the rich person’s child because they acquire the same knowledge in the same school system. Your child will be able to compete with the rest of the country and the world.”
Mr. Ayamdor further reminded the community that government schools belong to the people.
“Schools located in your community belong to you. It is therefore your responsibility to take good care of them and to collaborate with the teachers,” he said.
The director’s remarks came during the presentation of dual desks estimated at GH¢27,000 by the Bolgatanga Goodwill Rotary Club to Kanga Primary School, which previously had only about 27 dual desks for an enrolment of over 200 pupils.
