Pallas Apuakasi Declares Intent to Contest NDC Upper East Regional Secretary Position

By Gyabaab Wassah Duncan

Pallas Apuakasi has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Upper East Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing a decade of experience serving within various structures of the party.

In a statement announcing his intention, Mr. Apuakasi described his political journey as one centred on service rather than the pursuit of titles, saying his decision to contest the position is informed by years of involvement at the branch, constituency and regional levels.

According to him, he has served as a Branch Secretary for two terms and subsequently as a Constituency Executive Member, before taking up responsibilities at the regional level.

He further stated that, for the past decade, he has served as Secretary to the Regional Vetting Committee, Secretary to the Regional Reconciliation Committee, and Secretary to the Regional Disciplinary Committee.

Mr. Apuakasi said the experiences had exposed him to the realities of party organisation and taught him the importance of consultation, effective communication, reconciliation and respect for party processes.

“My journey has never been about titles. It has been about service,” he stated.

Experience at the grassroots

Mr. Apuakasi emphasised the importance of grassroots structures to the strength and sustainability of the NDC, noting that the party’s effectiveness goes beyond its formal offices.

He acknowledged the contributions of branch executives, constituency executives and party activists who, according to him, continue to commit their time and resources to keeping the party active within communities.

He said every member has a role to play in strengthening the organisation, regardless of the level at which they serve.

Why he is contesting

Explaining his motivation for seeking the regional secretary position, Mr. Apuakasi said his years of experience across different levels of the party had prepared him to contribute to the administration and organisation of the NDC in the Upper East Region.

He noted that the office of Regional Secretary requires more than coordination, highlighting discipline, organisation, communication, confidentiality, accessibility, consultation and commitment as important attributes for the position.

He also stressed the need for the Regional Secretary to understand the different circumstances and challenges confronting constituencies and branches across the region.

According to him, every member deserves to be heard and treated with respect.

“I come with experience, but also with humility”

Mr. Apuakasi said he was not presenting himself as a perfect candidate but as a party member who had gained experience through years of service and remained willing to learn.

“I come as a comrade who has served, learned, listened and continues to learn,” he said.

He added that his aspiration was to contribute to a regional party structure where communication is strengthened, organisational processes are respected, internal dialogue is encouraged and grassroots members have a meaningful voice in the affairs of the party.

A continued journey of service

Reflecting on his political journey, Mr. Apuakasi said his progression from Branch Secretary to Constituency Executive Member and subsequently to Regional Committee Secretary represented years of active participation in the structures of the NDC.

He said he was presenting that experience to the party with gratitude for the opportunities he had received and with an understanding of the responsibilities associated with leadership.

“The NDC is bigger than any individual. Our collective history is greater than any single office,” he said, adding that the party’s future would require members to prioritise its broader interests while working towards a strong, organised and united organisation.

Mr. Apuakasi concluded his declaration by formally announcing his intention to contest for the position of Upper East Regional Secretary of the NDC.

He said he looked forward to engaging party members across the region with “respect, openness, humility and a spirit of togetherness.”

“My journey has been about service. My aspiration is to continue that service.”
