Unlocking Economic Potential: Bolgatanga Old Market Women Plead for Change

The Bolgatanga Old Market, once a thriving hub of economic activity, is now facing a crisis. Approximately 1,000 stores and sheds lie locked — allocated to individuals years ago but still unused. Market women are sounding the alarm, calling on authorities to intervene and reallocate these facilities to revitalize the market and boost economic activity.

The Issue at Hand

Following the market’s rehabilitation, traders were allocated stores and sheds, but many opted to remain at the new market. As a result, those who wish to trade at the old market are left with limited space, hindering their ability to conduct business effectively.

The market women, led by Queen Linda Akupa, are pleading with the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to reallocate the locked stores to willing traders.

A Call for Action

“We are fed up with sales frustration,” Queen Akupa emphasized on the BlueWaves Breakfast Show. “Those who paid for the stores are not using them, while others who want to trade are forced to stay away. We appeal to the MCE or the Minister to take action and give the stores to those who need them.”

The traders believe that reallocating the stores would not only provide economic opportunities but also address chronic space constraints in the market.

The Impact

The situation has far-reaching consequences, affecting not only the traders but also the local economy. With many stores locked, traders are forced to operate in open areas — exposed to the elements and lacking basic amenities. This has led to:

  • Low Patronage: Trading at the new market is affected, with customers preferring the more vibrant atmosphere of the old market.
  • Revenue Loss: The Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly is losing revenue due to the underutilization of market facilities.
  • Theft and Poor Sanitation: The abandoned stores have become a haven for thieves and a breeding ground for unsanitary conditions.

A Solution Waiting to Happen

The market women are urging the authorities to act swiftly and reallocate the locked stores to willing traders. This move would not only revive the old market but also expand economic opportunities for local women and their families.

By unlocking the potential of the Bolgatanga Old Market, the community can come together to rebuild a thriving local economy and restore the market’s former glory.
