Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly Evicts Vendors, Demolishes Shops to Ease Congestion

Bolgatanga, U.E.R. — In an effort to restore order and improve accessibility around the main lorry station, the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly has undertaken an eviction exercise that led to the demolition of makeshift shops and kiosks belonging to street vendors.

The operation, which took place on Monday, targeted structures near the Bolgatanga lorry station, close to the Stanbic Bank branch. According to eyewitnesses, officials from the Assembly moved in to dismantle the stalls, resulting in significant losses for some traders whose goods and property were destroyed in the process.

Authorities explained that the eviction followed persistent complaints about congestion and obstruction caused by the roadside shops. The structures were said to have narrowed the pedestrian walkways and restricted access to nearby established businesses.

A resident, Mustafa Halidu, told Blue Wave Radio that the affected vendors had been given prior notice to vacate the area but failed to comply. “These vendors were notified by the landowners to move before the action was taken,” he said, adding that a deadline had been issued some time ago but was ignored.

The situation reportedly worsened after the construction of a new fence wall in the area, which further reduced available space and made the passage “more narrow.” Although the vendors were initially provided with a temporary location to operate, they allegedly overstayed and did not possess legal authorization to continue trading there.

Municipal Assembly officials defended the operation, saying it was necessary to clear the area and restore public access. The exercise ended with the complete removal of unauthorized structures, leaving the area open for public use.

The demolition has, however, sparked concern over the welfare of the displaced traders, many of whom are struggling to find alternative means of livelihood. Observers have urged the Assembly to adopt a more comprehensive strategy that balances urban order with the economic needs and rights of informal traders.
