Government and Citizens Must Share Responsibility in Checking Food Prices – NDC’s Williams Apalyam

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Upper East Regional Communications Team and Deputy Communications Officer for the Zebilla Constituency, Mr. William Apalyam, has called for a collective national effort to address the rising cost of food across markets and food vending joints in the country. Mr. Apalyam, who is also a lecturer at Bolgatanga Technical University, believes that reducing food prices should not be left solely to the government but should involve both authorities and citizens.

Speaking on the *BlueWaves Breakfast Show, Mr. Apalyam made the call in response to an appeal by the Overall Regional Best Farmer for the 2025 Farmers’ Day Celebration, *Naab Sierig Sore Sobil IV, Chief of Pelungu in the Nabdam Traditional Area. The revered chief had urged government and stakeholders to intervene in the growing concerns over food prices.

According to Mr. Apalyam, one practical way citizens can contribute is by adjusting their consumption habits to reduce the pressure on food vendors and market prices.

“I prepare my meals at home and take them to work. I don’t buy food as frequently as I used to. I encourage everyone to adopt a similar approach so that food vendors will be compelled to reduce their prices,” he stated.

Mr. Apalyam also dismissed claims circulating in some quarters that most of the award winners at this year’s Farmers’ Day celebrations were NDC sympathisers. He insisted that the awards were purely merit-based and not influenced by political affiliations.

He urged the public to ignore such misinformation.

“In my constituency, Zebilla, I know individuals who are affiliated with the NPP who received awards. So it is not true that the recognition was reserved for NDC members,” he clarified.

Mr. Apalyam reiterated that the NDC, both in government and in opposition, values fairness and would never endorse the politicisation of national awards meant to honour hardworking farmers.
