Elvis Figo Awonekai Declares Bid for Upper East NPP Regional Chairmanship, Pledges Unity and Renewal*

Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Bolgatanga Central and the party’s current Upper East Regional Secretary, Elvis Figo Awonekai, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of Regional Chairman ahead of the party’s upcoming internal elections.

In a statement issued on June 16, 2026, Mr. Awonekai announced that he would seek the mandate of party delegates with a vision to rebuild, unite, and reposition the NPP in the Upper East Region for victory in the 2028 general elections.

“It is not the time to retreat after defeat; it is time to rise, restructure and reclaim power,” he stated, underscoring his belief that the party must remain focused and resilient in opposition.

Mr. Awonekai paid tribute to the current regional executives for what he described as their years of dedicated service, sacrifice, and commitment to the party, promising to build upon the foundation they have established while introducing fresh strategies to strengthen the organization.

Highlighting his extensive political journey, he noted that his service within the NPP spans nearly every level of the party’s structure. Beginning as a Polling Station Secretary and later Polling Station Chairman, he subsequently served as Constituency Communications Officer and Constituency IT Coordinator before becoming Deputy Regional Secretary in 2018, a role he combined with serving as Regional IT Coordinator. In 2022, he was elected Regional Secretary and later contested as the party’s Parliamentary Candidate for Bolgatanga Central.

“I have fully integrated the party’s legacy, and I am ready to lead,” he declared.

A central pillar of his campaign is the promotion of unity across the party. Mr. Awonekai stressed that his grassroots experience has given him firsthand knowledge of the challenges confronting the NPP in the region and equipped him with the capacity to bridge divisions.

“Having served at all levels, I know the issues on the ground. I am the one to unite us, end divisions, and make every constituency stronger and ready for Election 2028,” he said.

He also pledged to strengthen resource mobilization and ensure equitable distribution of support across polling stations, electoral areas, and constituencies to facilitate early political engagement and improve party operations.

“Through my many years of service and network with those who believe in the NPP, and with my proven mobilisation abilities, I will ensure resources are sourced and effectively distributed to every polling station, electoral area and constituency across the region,” he explained.

In outlining his broader vision, Mr. Awonekai identified the Youth, Women, Research, and Communications wings as strategic pillars for the party’s future success. He promised to build on existing structures by investing in training, expanding membership drives, enhancing research capacity, and deploying effective communication strategies to strengthen grassroots mobilization.

“Our future as a party in the region rests on the Youth, Women, Research and Communications wings. I will continue from the laid foundation to restructure these wings into a strong election-winning machine,” he stated.

According to the aspiring Regional Chairman, these reforms will help create a dynamic and well-prepared party capable of reconnecting with voters and competing effectively in future elections.

Mr. Awonekai also announced plans to embark on a series of stakeholder engagements across the Upper East Region in the coming weeks as part of his campaign to secure the support of delegates.

Running on the campaign message, “Experienced, Accessible and Fearless,” he says his leadership will focus on fostering unity, strengthening internal structures, and preparing the NPP for a successful return to power.

His declaration officially sets the stage for what is expected to be a highly competitive contest for the leadership of the party in the Upper East Region, as members prepare for the NPP’s internal elections and chart a course toward the 2028 general elections.
