Abdallah Salifu Jonathan Eyes Upper East NDC Regional Secretary Role, Pledges Decent Party Offices Across Constituencies

Abdallah Salifu Jonathan, a three time contender for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Upper East Regional Secretary position, has outlined his vision for the role, emphasising experience, grassroots service and the construction of decent party offices in every constituency.
Speaking in a one-on-one interview on the Bluewaves Breakfast Show, Jonathan noted that while this is his third bid for the regional secretaryship, it marks the first regional contest for his three peers. He expressed respect for one of his opponents, Alexis, describing him as experienced and strong, but argued that his own advantages lie in prior experience, an established public profile and a demonstrable track record.
“The secretaryship is not just a desk job,” Jonathan said. “It involves coordination, service and helping people.” He pointed to his background running a business and serving people directly as preparation for the demands of the office.
His central campaign pledge is to ensure that party offices in all Upper East constituencies become decent and functional. In the longer term, he aims to construct proper offices within a four year mandate. He acknowledged that the national party cannot fund offices for all 276 constituencies nationwide, so the effort would require fundraising and close collaboration with Members of Parliament and other stakeholders.
Jonathan cited existing examples of progress. In Nabdam, he said Hon. Mark Kurt Nawaane and Chairman Tetteh Zure have established decent offices. In Bolgatanga East, he highlighted the large office built by Dr. Akuritinga Dominic Ayine, which is even being considered as a possible regional secretariat. While some constituencies already have facilities, he stressed that not all do, and he would work with MPs and stakeholders to close the gap.
He also used the platform to praise development projects linked to Upper East MPs. Jonathan recalled that, “God forbid,” if he ever committed a crime, he would prefer to be taken to the Dr. Ayine Police Station because it features a library, bunk beds, a heated shower, a kitchen and an eating area“just like home.” He added that a similar facility is being developed for the Fire Service.
He mentioned ongoing work on a library and ashram with roses, efforts to adapt long-scoped rules visible in front of Zuarungu NTC, and planned road works in front of Dr. Ayine’s house. At Gambibgo Senior High School, he said GETFund projects are advancing, with two and three storey structures already rising.
Turning to parliamentary performance, Jonathan singled out Majority Leader Hon. Mahama Ayariga, who hails from the Upper East, for his contributions. He also praised other MPs, including Dr. Apaks Clement, describing the region’s young parliamentarians as “doing fantastically well.”
On security and infrastructure, Jonathan reported that he visited Bawku the previous day and found it “one of the most peaceful places you can even sleep outside.” He said roads are taking shape, drains have been completed and gravel is being laid, with the area set for further transformation.
Jonathan framed these developments as the kind of progress the party should continue to deliver, urging support for the MPs and for his own bid to serve as regional secretary.
