Berekum City FC have taken a significant step forward in their 2026/27 UMB Division One League campaign, recording their first victory of the season with a hard-fought 1–0 win over Real Tamale United (RTU) in their Matchday Three encounter at the Kurt ES Okraku Technical Centre , Winkogo – Upper East Region.
The victory, played at the Kurt E.S. Okraku Technical Centre, provided a much-needed boost for a Berekum City side that had started the campaign on the road and was still searching for its first three points.
The Ghana Football Association had earlier confirmed that Berekum City would play their home matches in Bolgatanga / Winkogo , giving the club a presence in the Upper East Region during the 2026/27 Division One campaign. (Ghana Football Association)
A DIFFICULT START ON THE ROAD:
Berekum City’s campaign began away from home on September 19, when they travelled to face Kalibi SC at the Malik Jabir Stadium.
It was a narrow opening-day defeat, with Kalibi securing a 1–0 victory.
Despite the setback, Berekum City showed resilience in their second league outing.
They travelled to Tamale to face Northern City FC at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium on September 25. Unlike their opening fixture, Berekum City returned with a valuable point after playing out a 1–1 draw.
The result was particularly important because it demonstrated that the team could compete away from home and recover from the disappointment of their opening-day defeat.
FIRST HOME GAME, FIRST VICTORY:
Returning home for Matchday Three, Berekum City faced another experienced opponent in Real Tamale United, a club with considerable experience in Ghana’s national competitions.
This time, however, Berekum City made home advantage count.
A disciplined performance produced a 1–0 victory, giving the club their first three points of the campaign.
The win also completed an interesting progression across Berekum City’s opening three matches:
Matchday 1: Kalibi SC 1–0 Berekum City
Matchday 2: Northern City 1–1 Berekum City
Matchday 3: Berekum City 1–0 RTU
That sequence gives Berekum City four points from their opening three matches, having scored two goals and conceded two.
FROM SETBACK TO STABILITY:
Although four points from three matches may not yet tell the full story of Berekum City’s ambitions, the trajectory is encouraging.
The team lost their first game by the narrowest of margins, travelled to Tamale and secured a draw, before returning home to claim all three points.
That progression suggests a side gradually finding its rhythm in a long and demanding Division One campaign.
The 2026/27 Division One League is scheduled to run over a 30-week campaign, meaning there is still a considerable distance to travel.
For Berekum City, therefore, the challenge now is to turn this promising start into consistency.
THE UPPER EAST FACTOR:
Berekum City’s decision to stage their home matches in Upper East Region adds another interesting dimension to their campaign.
While the club carries the identity of Berekum, its home fixtures in the Upper East Region mean that football supporters in Bolgatanga and surrounding communities have an opportunity to follow Division One football at close quarters.
The club’s success at its adopted home venue could therefore become important not only to its league ambitions but also to its relationship with the local football-supporting public.
“The first home victory over RTU is an encouraging beginning for the team, the Supporters and the good people of the Upper East Region” – Adamu Mohammed (Head Coach , Berekum City Fc).
THE ROAD AHEAD
Berekum City cannot afford to become complacent.
Their next assignment will test whether the victory over RTU can be the beginning of a stronger run or simply an isolated result.
Adamu Mohammed ( Head Coach of Berekum City Fc) after the match also Indicated that “the immediate objective would be to build on the defensive solidity shown in their first three matches while becoming more productive in front of goal”
From a narrow opening-day defeat at Kalibi, through a valuable away draw against Northern City, to a first home victory over RTU, the journey has begun with signs of improvement.
Berekum City have four points from three matches. The season is still young, but the message from their opening fixtures is clear: they are settling into the Division One battle—and they intend to compete.
