Bolgatanga Central MP Through GETFund Secures Funding for Sherigu Senior High School Project

Bolgatanga, Upper East Region — A major boost has been secured for education in the Bolgatanga Municipality as the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, through the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), has facilitated funding for critical infrastructure development at the Bolga-Sherigu Community Day Senior High School.

The intervention marks a turning point for the school, which has struggled with severe infrastructure deficits since its absorption into the public system in 2015, with little to no significant development at its current location.

The urgency of the situation became more apparent in July 2025, when reports emerged that eleven female students had become pregnant—an issue partly linked by school authorities and community leaders to inadequate facilities and poor learning conditions.

The school has long grappled with numerous challenges, including dilapidated classroom blocks, the absence of a dining hall and kitchen, lack of staff accommodation, poor sanitation facilities, and the absence of key academic infrastructure such as an administration block, library, and science laboratories.

Despite a generous donation of land by the Sherigu community at Basengo for the relocation of the school, development at the new site had stalled, with only two incomplete three-unit classroom blocks standing prior to the latest intervention.

Relief is now in sight following a sod-cutting ceremony held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, by the Upper East Regional Minister, Akamugre Donatus Atanga, to officially commence eleven GETFund-funded projects at the new school site.

The scope of work includes a three-storey, 18-unit classroom block, separate dormitory facilities for boys and girls with courtyards, a two-storey administration and library complex, and a 12-seater toilet facility.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Regional Minister urged traditional leaders to ensure proper documentation of school lands to safeguard educational investments and prevent future disputes.

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive, Roland Ayoo, described the development as a fulfillment of commitments to promote equitable infrastructure distribution, noting that the project reflects broader government efforts to improve educational outcomes in underserved communities.

Headmistress of the school, Madam Janne Edna Karaah, welcomed the intervention, expressing gratitude to the government and stakeholders for responding to the school’s long-standing challenges. She noted that operating from temporary structures has significantly hindered effective teaching and learning.

She further appealed for the completion of an additional three-unit classroom block initiated by the Municipal Assembly, emphasizing its importance in easing congestion and improving academic delivery.

The GETFund-supported projects are expected to significantly transform the learning environment at Bolga-Sherigu Community Day SHS, restoring hope among students, staff, and the wider community.
