Founder of Regentropfen University College selected for Ghana Philanthropy Awards for contribution to education

The Founder and President of Regentropfen University College, Rev. Fr. Dr Moses Asaah Awinongya, has been selected for the Distinguished Contribution to Education for Underprivileged Children Award at the fifth Ghana Philanthropy Awards, scheduled for November 19, 2026, in Accra.

A formal letter dated October 14, 2026, notified him of the selection, which the organisers say recognises contributions to education, social well-being and national development.

The ceremony is expected to take place at Alisa Hotel under the theme “Honouring Purpose-Driven Giving for a Better Ghana.”

The recognition comes as Regentropfen University College marks 10 years of expanding access to tertiary education in the Upper East Region, having grown from an initial enrolment of 46 students in 2016 to approximately 1,300 students in 2026.

The institution has also expanded its academic offerings and infrastructure over the past decade.

Established in Namoo, in the Bongo District, the university college was founded on the vision of bringing higher education closer to young people in underserved communities, where pursuing university education elsewhere can place considerable financial and logistical pressure on students and their families.

At the institution’s 10th anniversary celebrations in October 2026, Rev. Fr. Dr Awinongya reaffirmed his commitment to using education to promote talent, entrepreneurship and community development, arguing that a university’s purpose should extend beyond awarding certificates to preparing young people to contribute meaningfully to society.

The institution, which initially received accreditation to run 10 programmes comprising five diploma and five undergraduate degree programmes, has since expanded to offer five diploma programmes, 10 undergraduate degree programmes and three postgraduate programmes.

Its academic offerings span areas including business, computing, education, health and agriculture, reflecting an effort to provide professional and practical training relevant to the needs of students and the wider economy.

The institution has also outlined plans to strengthen postgraduate education, research, industry partnerships and international collaborations, while pursuing a charter that would enable it to operate as an autonomous university, subject to the relevant regulatory requirements.

These ambitions form part of its longer-term strategy to strengthen professional training and expand educational opportunities in northern Ghana.

The Ghana Philanthropy Awards is organised by The Business Executive, a Ghana-based media and events group. The scheme recognises individuals, businesses and institutions for philanthropic interventions, charitable work, corporate social responsibility and contributions to socio-economic development.

The organisers say the award selection process involves nominations and independent evaluation.

Rev. Fr. Dr Awinongya’s selection highlights the role of educational initiatives in expanding opportunities for underserved communities, particularly in regions where access to tertiary education remains an important development priority.

The award ceremony is scheduled for November 19, 2026, in Accra.
