NHIA Upper East Regional Director Leads Team to Mugtisa to Register Vulnerable Residents onto National Health Insurance Scheme

The Upper East Regional Director of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Salifu Kombat, has led a high-level delegation from the Authority to Mugtisa in the Builsa North District of the Upper East Region to support the registration of vulnerable residents onto the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection as part of its Community Dialogue Series, an initiative aimed at engaging communities while extending critical social intervention programmes to underserved populations. The registration targeted vulnerable groups, including children, women, older persons, and other individuals who require support to access healthcare services without financial hardship.

The NHIA delegation included Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Officers George Apasigo Abeliwine and James Kopanamo Babavaripaga, the Upper East Regional Public Relations Manager, Alhassan Abubakari Suwaidu, and the Builsa North District Manager of the NHIA, Mr. Sunday Akpitipulah. Their presence highlighted the Authority’s commitment to ensuring that healthcare services and insurance coverage reach even the most remote communities in the region.

The outreach formed part of the NHIA’s broader strategy to increase active membership and improve access to affordable healthcare by bringing registration services directly to communities. Through close collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Authority sought to remove barriers that often prevent vulnerable populations from enrolling in the scheme.

Addressing community members during the event, Mr. Sunday Akpitipulah explained the significance of the National Health Insurance Scheme in reducing the financial burden associated with seeking medical care. He encouraged residents to take full advantage of the opportunity to register, stressing that active NHIS membership enables individuals and families to receive healthcare services without facing significant out-of-pocket expenses.

He also educated participants on the importance of renewing their memberships regularly and urged parents and guardians to ensure that their children are enrolled so they can benefit from uninterrupted access to healthcare whenever the need arises.

Dr. Salifu Kombat and his team interacted with residents and monitored the registration process, reaffirming the NHIA’s commitment to delivering efficient and people-centred services across the Upper East Region. Their participation demonstrated the Authority’s dedication to expanding health insurance coverage and supporting national efforts toward universal health coverage.

The collaboration between the NHIA and the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection was widely welcomed by residents, many of whom expressed appreciation for bringing the registration exercise directly to their community. Beneficiaries noted that the initiative would ease their access to healthcare and provide much-needed financial protection against medical expenses.

The successful exercise in Mugtisa serves as another example of the NHIA’s ongoing efforts to deepen public awareness, strengthen community engagement, and ensure that vulnerable groups—including women, children, older persons, and other disadvantaged residents—are not left behind in Ghana’s healthcare system.

As the National Health Insurance Authority continues to partner with government agencies and local stakeholders, initiatives such as the Mugtisa outreach are expected to play a vital role in increasing enrolment, improving health outcomes, and promoting equitable access to quality healthcare throughout the Upper East Region and beyond.
