The Deputy Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region, Benjamin Atuasi, has urged the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to exercise restraint and ensure that its criticisms of the government’s road infrastructure projects are based on facts.
Mr. Atuasi acknowledged that residents of the Upper East Region deserve better roads, improved healthcare facilities and access to potable water, stressing that development remains a collective aspiration of the people.
He, however, cautioned against what he described as inaccurate narratives surrounding the state of road projects in the region, particularly claims that the NDC government awarded contracts for road construction but failed to commence work.
According to him, the delay in the execution of the road project was partly attributable to an audit initiated by the previous NPP administration, which affected the progress of the project.
He maintained that attributing the entire delay to the current NDC government without acknowledging the circumstances surrounding the project would be misleading.
Mr. Atuasi further disclosed that he personally participated in demonstrations over the poor state of the road and remains committed to advocating for its completion.
“I personally joined the demonstrations on that road, and I continue to call on the government to ensure its completion,” he stated.
Touching on development in the Bawku area, Mr. Atuasi said several roads in Bawku Municipality had received attention, while Pusiga District had also benefited from various development interventions.
He was quick to add, however, that these developments should not be a reason for complacency, insisting that there is still more work to be done, particularly considering the poor condition of some roads in the region.
Mr. Atuasi, who said he was part of the delegation during President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to the area, disclosed that his subsequent follow-up on the road project indicated that the contractor had temporarily moved off-site due to a shortage of equipment but was expected to return.
He expressed hope that the contractor would resume work and ensure the timely completion of the project to ease the difficulties faced by commuters and residents.
Concluding his remarks, Mr. Atuasi stressed that the NPP, as an opposition party, has every right to hold the government accountable and criticise its performance.
However, he insisted that such criticism must be constructive, balanced and grounded in verifiable facts.
He reiterated that the people of the Upper East Region deserve development and that all political parties must put the interests of residents above partisan considerations.
