Bolgatanga, Ghana – A young woman has lost her life in a tragic road traffic accident in Bolgatanga after she was allegedly pursued by an officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday morning.
The fatal incident occurred at approximately 8:00 a.m. along the Tindonmolgo–Sherigu Road, near the Agaara Bridge, sending shockwaves through residents of the area and raising concerns about police pursuit procedures and road safety.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to A1 Radio’s Joshua Asaah, the deceased was riding an unregistered Yamaha scooter when an MTTD officer, also on a motorbike, allegedly began pursuing her from the Bolgatanga township towards the outskirts of the municipality in an attempt to apprehend her.
Witnesses said the rider lost control of the scooter after hitting a speed bump near the Akamengre house, close to the Agaara Bridge. The motorbike reportedly veered off balance, throwing the rider onto the road.
Residents at the scene said the impact of the crash was severe, with the woman believed to have sustained fatal head injuries. She was pronounced dead at the scene before emergency medical assistance could save her.
Eyewitnesses further alleged that the police officer involved in the pursuit left the scene immediately after the crash. The allegations have heightened tensions within the community, with some residents claiming that a group of youth attempted to pursue the officer. According to the witnesses, the officer managed to return to the Upper East Regional Police Headquarters, where he reportedly sought safety after angry residents reacted to the incident.
The Ghana National Ambulance Service responded promptly to an emergency call and arrived at the scene shortly afterward. However, paramedics confirmed that the victim had already died and advised that the Ghana Police Service be contacted to transport the body.
A police team later arrived in a police vehicle with registration number GP 3364, and with the assistance of residents, conveyed the deceased’s body from the scene.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the deceased and her place of residence had not been officially established. The Ghana Police Service had also not issued an official statement regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident or the allegations made by eyewitnesses.
The incident has sparked widespread concern among residents of Bolgatanga, with many calling for a transparent, impartial, and thorough investigation to establish the facts surrounding the woman’s death. Community members have also urged the Ghana Police Service to clarify the circumstances of the alleged pursuit and determine whether established operational procedures were followed.
The case has reignited public discussions on the balance between effective traffic law enforcement and public safety, particularly concerning police pursuits involving motorcyclists. Road safety advocates argue that while enforcing traffic regulations is essential, pursuit tactics should be carefully managed to minimize risks to both suspects and the general public.
